INTERVIEW: 2 LIVE CREW

1. I understand you guys have a new album called "Just Wanna Be Heard", Can you tell us about it? How would you define it? What should we expect?

Brother Marquis: Like a new style, updated 2 Live Crew.

Fresh Kid Ice: Its a good project with several producers and features. It shows growth in the group, a nice blend of both new and typical 2 Live Flavor. Production by Mannie Fresh and Funk Boogie. Features with Mannie Fresh, Insane Clown Posse, E-40 and Too Short.



2. Many rap groups have come and gone since the 80s, How did the 2 Live Crew manage to keep it going well into the new millenium? And wasnt there a breif break-up for the group in the early 90s where solo projects went into effect.

BM: Yes, da group broke up. I did not have a solo project out. We went our separate ways to “refocus” our ideas.

FKI: By being original and staying current. There was a break up from internal problems. Yes, there were some solo projects.



3. What would you say is your trademark song? and why?

BM: "Me So Horny" and "Pop that Coochie". Sex sells
FKI: "Me So Horny". Biggest hit to date.



4. If you could change anything from the past, what would it be and why?

BM: The business of the group!!!
FKI: Some business decisions



5. Do you guys still reside in Miami, Florida?

BM: Yes.
FKI: Me TOO



6. What makes the music of 2 Live Crew so different in comparison to artists like Jay-Z and LL Cool J?

BM: Party songs and up tempo beats.
FKI: Musical content and we are considered the party crew.



7. I wanna go back for a minute with this question....
What was your first impression when you heard that "As Nasty As They Wanna Be" was not suitable to sell in record stores? And that if it was being sold, store owners would be prosecuted.

BM: Surprised. They tried to prosecute but we didn't get any time. We paved the way for rap artist of today by taking the heat over the explicit content.

FKI: We felt it was wrong and we were just making party music and people should have a choice.



8. How does it feel knowing the album that created so much controversy (As Nasty As They Wanna Be) sold well over 2 million copies?

BM: Good. This album was the finest independent album to have such broad mass worldwide appeal.

FKI: It proves that there is a market for different styles of rap



9. I know that some old school groups are making comebacks. Including The Fat Boys, JJ Fad, Eric B and Rakim along with many others. Is this the time for the 80s rap artists to make a comeback? Your thoughts?

BM: Yes, old school is a major part of rap. Believe that!!
FKI: I feel there a market for all groups. You wouldn't say groups like the O Jay's are coming back.



10. What should we expect in the near future from 2 Live Crew? and where can fans find you online?

BM: Movies, books, more albums and our new record label NuFocuz Entertainment.

Ja Ja 2 Live Crew in ihrer alten Besetztung war schon was besonderes die Live in den USA zu sehen. Bin mit meinem Kumpel Rainer damals durch Zufall auf ein Plakat gestoßen als die in Coconut Grove (Stadtteil von Miami) aufgetreten sind. War voll Geil vor allem was die für Sauereien auf der Bühne abgezogen hatten. War auch ne Menge Polizeipräsenz vor Ort.

Vor ca. 4/5 Jahren hab ich von ner Radiostation eine Promomaxi erhalten wo allein das Cover schon verboten gehört hätte.

so einfach kannsd des a ned lauschn. Das einzigste wasde hörn kannst is des mit E-40. Zu den anderen kann ich nur sagen....Connections

Ich habe vor einigen Jahren beim Hunderennen in Miami einen Typen gesehen der ein Luke Records T-Shirt anghabt hatte kam mit ihm ins Gespräch und es handelte sich um einen Mitarbeiter von Luke Records. Wollte Luke Records besuchen er meinte als Touri ist es nicht Empfehlenswert dort hinzugehen it eins der schlimmsten Stdtteile von Miami - Liberty City wo die angestellten auch jeden ag Angst haben weil dort viel passiert. Da ist es nichts ungewöhnliches wenn einer seine alte umnietet usw. Daraufhin verienbarten wir einen Treffpunkt wo er mir ein Haufen Promomaterial mitbrachte und auch Luke ist da mitgekommen war total Geil. Mit dem Typen hab ich immer Kontakt gehalten und bin so immer wieder an viele Sachen rangekommen. Und genau von solchen Connections hört man so einiges bzw. bekommt man so einiges an Promo Zeugs. Hab etliches dadurch was nie V.Ö wurde und ich auch nicht weitergeben werde.
